Mission, Vision & Values

The occasion of starting a blog is certainly nothing to be celebrated but, life affords us limited opportunities to start off on the right foot.  I find myself wanting to sketch out some grand plan or find an overarching theme to adhere to.  In truth, I don't really have a specific goal in mind apart from unburdening myself of some of the things that overpopulate my thinking.

Still, some formality to the occasion is not necessarily a wasted effort.  Let's start with the classic business school Mission, Vision and Values approach.  The mission for my objectives is broadly speaking.  That's pretty safe territory for a blog of any sort.

Next, the vision is a description of the future state of something.  That's trickier for a couple of reasons.  First, we have definitions.  What is having its state observed?  When does the initial state begin and the final state commence?  Let's put a pin in those for the moment.

Finally, values are the purpose and goals of the efforts in writing here.  Also not terribly difficult to articulate what I stand for, believe in, or how I think others should be treated.  And since these values are for my writing, not an organization, they are really a reflection of my personality, ethics, and morals.  Would it gain my sympathy from them in person?  Perhaps - but I think it's more important that they find some sympathy in what I have to write.

So my Mission is to write a far-reaching blog without limits on any subject that interests me or is currently on my mind.  I don't intend this to be a political blog,  but the subject might come up.  I tend to enjoy science, history, and nature so that is what my efforts will focus on.

The Vision I have is of a place where my collected writings are meaningful to special people I'm writing directly for but mostly just enjoyable.  If you are up for that, I'll do my best to be entertaining.

Finally my Values.  Harming people intentionally is wrong, and doing it for petty selfish, bigoted, or small-minded reasons is reprehensible.   I believe that forgiveness is possible and warranted when good faith is demonstrated and it's something we should all strive for.  We all make mistakes that we wish could be undone and could use a break from suffering them.  In short treat, people like you want to be treated, and if you fail in that then look for ways to make amends.

I think that summarizes my initial thoughts.  I have a collection of topics that have been dancing in my peripheral vision for a few weeks now that I would very much like to get down on paper.  The largest is complex and I haven't drawn a conclusion from it yet.  So I may delve into smaller subjects first and no timeline for publication yet, but I will work on that.
